Add conditions in a few places that get called a lot during config
parsing and call functions that talk to the X server.  In any normal
operation, we'll always have a server connection here, so it makes no
difference.  In the future, we may not in cases where we're not
actually taking over a display, and in those cases just stubbing out
of the functions is fine.
