Since ubuntu natty will feature unity as the default desktop, the panel applet won't work. Also, gnome3 will be phasing out applets as well (and replacing them with...?), so need to test out other ideas. Current idea is to use libappindicator with some custom menu items. Has some limitations so far, seems to be no way to tell if the menu is popped up, to clear the attention status, so I had to add an extra menu item to clear it. Could be tedious. Only shows the last 5 message summaries currently.
