lp:1168084 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-manual-tests/+bug/1168084
Install Media: trusty-server-amd64.iso (daily zsync 15-JAN-2014) Host-OS: 14.04 Native Desktop + Updates Guest-OS: 14.04 Minimal System & 14.04 Virtual Minimal System Vbox: v4.3.2 from Ubuntu Repo
Note: From a fresh install perspective, these two are identical, with the exception of picking Minimal System v.s. Virtual Minimal System. See "Whats The Different Below" for more details.
** Install_Minimal_System - Provide basic instruction for installation of Install Minimal System - Perform two tests to validate the install: --> Verify the install is able to update via apt-get --> Verify the system can access tasksel
Actual updates & task installation was not performed.
** Install_Minimal_Virtual_Server - Provide basic instruction for installation of Ubuntu Server (Minimal Install) - Perform two tests to validate the install: --> Verify the install is able to update via apt-get --> Verify the system can access tasksel
Actual updates & task installation was not performed.
WHAT's THE DIFFERENCE Basically, the virtual-minimal-system is optimized for working in a virtual machine such as VirtualBox, VMWare, etc., with the biggests difference being that of the Kernel itself. In the Virtual Kernel, things like Audio and SATA drivers / modules are left out. For better performance in a Virtual Minimal System, I've found the following to be useful changes to the Guest-VM settings:
-- Enable PAE/NX -- Delete the SATA Controller and use SCSI Controller for the hard disk. -- Enable host I/O cache.
Kernel Module Stats using lsmod: 14.04 Workstation VM-Host: 56 Modules 14.04 Minimal System" 25 Modules 14.04 Virtual-Minimal-System: 11 Modules
We could do Diff's on all three, but for the purpose of this bug, I believe that's sufficient.
