Rework tarball creation to avoid these warnings:
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
tar: /tmp/tmpNhHGL5: file changed as we read it

To avoid this, we pass a new relative "tarball" subdirectory to tar instead of
the absolute tempdir which contains the destination tarball itself.
