Remove "error" from debug output

This patch changes debug functions in the scripts to echo rather than
call the error function.  Previously, when one of these scripts are
run with xtrace enabled (set -x) debug output will call 'error' and
we end up with dirty output with many instances of the word 'error'
for uneventful debug output.
