Testing found that /run/systemd existed in 14.04 environments but systemd-detect-virt did not. The primary win here is in reducing the number of calls to dpkg-query from 3 (1 per package query) to 1. The other change is to reduce invocations of uname from 3 to 1. The net win depends really on how many packages are in the dpkg database.
