		<title>Music and audio</title>
		<para>Whether you want to play, rip, edit or organize your music, Ubuntu has the tools you need.</para>
		
		<sect2 id="music-play" status="writing">
			<title>Play and organize music</title>
			<para>To play and organize your music, Ubuntu comes with <application>Rhythmbox Music Player</application>. To start <application>Rhythmbox</application>, choose <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Sound &amp; Video</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Rhythmbox Music Player</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.</para>
			<para>When you first use <application>Rhythmbox</application>, it will scan your home folder for any supported music files you have and will make them available to be played automatically.</para>
			<para><application>Rhythmbox</application> supports many useful features, some of which are turned off by default. For example, it can show the album cover of the song currently being played, or share music with others.</para>
			<para>To access these optional features, press <menuchoice><guimenuitem>Edit</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Plugins...</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and select the features which you would like to use by ticking them.</para>

		<sect2 id="music-audiocds-playing" status="complete">
			<title>Playing audio CDs</title>
			<para>When you insert an audio CD, the <application>Sound Juicer</application> CD player and ripper opens automatically. If you are connected to the Internet, <application>Sound Juicer</application> will display the CD artist, album and track names.</para>
			<para>To play the CD, click the <guibutton>Play</guibutton> button or press <keycombo><keycap>Ctrl</keycap><keycap>P</keycap></keycombo>. To play a particular track, double-click on the track or select the track and click <guibutton>Play</guibutton>.</para>
			<para>As an alternative to <application>Sound Juicer</application>, the <application>Rhythmbox Music Player</application> is also able to play CDs. Simply insert a CD, ignore or close <application>Sound Juicer</application>, start <application>Rhythmbox</application> and double-click the audio CD item in the <guilabel>Devices</guilabel> list.</para>

		<sect2 id="music-audiocds-ripping" status="review">
			<title>Ripping audio CDs</title>
			<para>If you would like to keep a copy of an audio CD on your computer without needing to insert the CD to listen to it, it is possible to <emphasis>rip</emphasis> or <emphasis>extract</emphasis> the music onto your computer.</para>
			<para><application>Sound Juicer CD Extractor</application> is able to rip CDs. To start <application>Sound Juicer</application> manually, choose <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Sound &amp; Video</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Sound Juicer CD Extractor</guimenuitem></menuchoice>. Alternatively, it should start automatically when you insert a CD.</para>
			<para>Follow the instructions in the Sound Juicer manual on <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:sound-juicer#extracting">how to rip audio CDs</ulink>.</para>

		<sect2 id="music-apps" status="review">
			<title>Other audio-related tasks</title>
			<para>Ubuntu provides a wide range of tools for all of your audio playing, editing and recording needs.</para>
			<itemizedlist>
				<listitem>
					<para><emphasis role="strong">Change the track details of music</emphasis></para>
					<para>If you have music files which have incorrect or incomplete information about the artist or album which they are from, install <application>Cowbell Music Organizer</application>. Cowbell allows you to edit track details, and can automatically correct track information for many CDs.</para>
				</listitem>
				<listitem>
					<para><emphasis role="strong">Use a different music player</emphasis></para>
					<para>Many alternative music players are available apart from the default Rhythmbox Music Player. These include Amarok, Banshee Music Player, Beep Media Player, Exaile! and Muine Music Player. Each player has its own strengths and weaknesses, and which one you use will probably depend on personal preference.</para>

				<listitem>
					<para><emphasis role="strong">Listen to Podcasts</emphasis></para>
					<para>Podcasts are a way of listening to music and radio shows broadcast on the Internet. Thousands of different shows are available, such as <ulink url="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/waystolisten/podcasts/">BBC Radio</ulink>, <ulink url="http://www.lugradio.org/">LugRadio</ulink> and <ulink url="http://www.thenakedscientists.com">The Naked Scientists</ulink>. The Rhythmbox Music Player is able to play podcasts. See the <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:rhythmbox#podcast">Rhythmbox manual</ulink> for more information.</para>
				</listitem>
				<listitem>
					<para><emphasis role="strong">Record sounds and music</emphasis></para>
					<para>If you have appropriate audio hardware (such as a microphone), you can record sounds onto your computer. Press <keycombo><keycap>Alt</keycap><keycap>F2</keycap></keycombo>, type <quote>gnome-sound-recorder</quote> and press <guibutton>Run</guibutton> to start the Sound Recorder. See the <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:gnome-sound-recorder#grecord-usage">Sound Recorder manual</ulink> for further instructions.</para>
				</listitem>
				<listitem>
					<para><emphasis role="strong">Edit sounds and music</emphasis></para>
					<para>To edit audio, install <ulink url="http://www.jokosher.org/">Jokosher</ulink> or <ulink url="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/">Audacity</ulink>. Jokosher is able to record audio as well as edit it, and Audacity provides many powerful sound-editing features.</para>

				<listitem>
					<para><emphasis role="strong">Install a full suite of multimedia editing applications</emphasis></para>
					<para>If you would like to turn your computer into a multimedia production suite, why not consider installing <ulink url="http://ubuntustudio.org/">Ubuntu Studio</ulink>? It provides a large selection of applications for creating audio, video and graphics.</para>
				</listitem>

		<sect2 id="music-audiostreams" status="complete">
			<title>Listen to online audio streams</title>
			<para>You can listen to <emphasis>streaming audio</emphasis> from the Internet. This can be thought of as an online radio service, as it is usually broadcast live.</para>
			<para><application>Rhythmbox</application> is able to play most streaming audio, such as online radio shows. However, some services require a special player to be used to listen to them.</para>

				<para>Install the <application>Last-Exit</application> player to listen to the <ulink url="http://www.last.fm">Last.fm</ulink> service.</para>
				</listitem>
				<listitem>
				<para>Install <application>RealPlayer 10</application> to watch and listen to streams in the <emphasis>Real Media</emphasis> formats. <application>RealPlayer</application> is available from the <emphasis>Commercial</emphasis> repository.</para>
				</listitem>
			</itemizedlist>

		<title>Use a portable audio player</title>
		<para>Ubuntu supports many portable audio players, including the iPod.</para>
		
		<sect2 id="music-dap-ipod" status="complete">
			<title>Using an iPod</title>
			<para>You can play music directly off an iPod with <application>Rhythmbox Music Player</application>. Plug the iPod into the computer, and open <application>Rhythmbox</application>.</para>
			<para>To transfer music files to and from an iPod, you can use <application>gtkpod</application>:</para>

			<para>Ubuntu supports many other audio players. Most of these work simply by plugging them in to your computer and copying music onto them.</para>
			<para>Users of <emphasis>Creative Nomad Jukebox</emphasis> audio players may need to install the <application>gnomad2</application> package from the <quote>Universe</quote> repository to be able to use their device (see <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:add-applications">Add Applications</ulink>).</para>

		<title>Movies, DVDs and videos</title>
		<para>You can watch movies and video clips in Ubuntu by using the <application>Totem Movie Player</application>.</para>
		<para>Start <application>Totem</application> by clicking <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Sound &amp; Video</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Movie Player</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.</para>
		
		<sect2 id="video-dvd" status="review">
			<title>Playing DVDs</title>
			<para>In order to play DVDs, you must install some additional software. Unfortunately, DVD support cannot be provided by default in Ubuntu due to legal and technical restrictions.</para>
			<caution>
				<para>Many commercial DVDs are <emphasis>encrypted</emphasis> and so require the use of <emphasis>decryption</emphasis> software in order to play them. In some countries, the use of such decryption software is not permitted by law. Verify that you are within your rights in using it.</para>
			</caution>
			<procedure>

					<para>Install the following packages (see <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:add-applications">Add Applications</ulink>):</para>

					<para>If you would like to play encrypted DVDs (see the legal note above), press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Accessories</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Terminal</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and type the following into the screen which appears, followed by the <keycap>Return</keycap> key:<screen>sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh</screen></para>

					<para>Press
					<menuchoice><guimenu>System</guimenu><guimenuitem>Preferences</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Removable Drives and Media</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and click on the <guilabel>Multimedia</guilabel> tab.
					</para>

					<para>In the <guilabel>Command</guilabel> box under <guilabel>Video DVD Discs</guilabel>, type <quote>gxine -S dvd:/</quote> (without quotes) and then press <guibutton>Close</guibutton>.</para>
				</step>
				<step>
					<para>Insert a DVD disc into the DVD drive of your computer. It should play automatically in <application>gxine</application>. You can press the <keycap>f</keycap> key to watch the DVD full-screen.</para>
				</step>
			</procedure>

		<sect2 id="video-badformats" status="complete">
			<title>Playing proprietary formats</title>
			<para>Videos can come in a range of different formats. However, some of these formats are proprietary or commercial and so cannot be included in Ubuntu by default. As a result, additional software must be installed to allow you to view such formats. The following applications may be able to play certain formats which the default applications are unable to handle:</para>

				<listitem><para><application>MPlayer Movie Player</application></para></listitem>
				<listitem><para><application>VLC media player</application></para></listitem>

			<title>Watch videos in a web browser</title>
			<para>Many videos available on the Internet can be played from within your web browser. However, many of these require an additional <emphasis>browser plugin</emphasis> to be installed first.</para>
			<para>The plugins you require depend on the format of the videos you would like to watch. A short list of plugins available for the default <application>Firefox Web Browser</application> is given below:</para>

				<para>For the <application>Mplayer</application> plugin, install the <application>mozilla-mplayer</application> package.</para>
				</listitem>

				<para>For the <application>VLC</application> plugin, install the <application>mozilla-plugin-vlc</application> package.</para>

				<para>For the <application>Helix</application> plugin, install the <application>mozilla-helix-player</application> package.</para>
				</listitem>
				<listitem>
				<para>For a free (open-source) <application>Flash</application> plugin, install the <application>mozilla-plugin-gnash</application> package. For the proprietary <application>Flash</application> plugin, install the <application>flashplugin-nonfree</application> package. 			<title>Watch video podcasts</title>
			<para>As well as online audio broadcasts (podcasts), many video broadcasts are available from the Internet too. Ubuntu provides several optional applications which you can use to watch videos from the Internet:</para>

			<title>Record and edit video</title>
			<para>Ubuntu comes with a selection of tools to help you record and edit video.</para>

					<para><application>DeVeDe</application> is a DVD authoring application capable of creating DVD discs which can be played in set-top DVD players.</para>

					<para><application>Kino</application> is an advanced video editor. It features excellent integration with IEEE-1394 (Firewire) for capture, VTR control, and recording back to the camera. It captures video to disk in Raw DV and AVI format, in both type-1 DV and type-2 DV (separate audio stream) encodings.</para>

					<para><application>PiTiVi Video Editor</application> is a simple, easy to use video editor.</para>

	<sect1 id="codecs" status="review">
		<title>What is a codec?</title>
		<para>A <emphasis>multimedia codec</emphasis> is a small piece of software which allows you to watch videos or listen to music of a specific format. There are many different multimedia formats and so you may need to install several codecs. Ubuntu includes many codecs by default.</para>

		<para>To install extra codecs, press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Add/Remove...</guimenuitem></menuchoice>, type <quote>codec</quote> in the <guilabel>Search</guilabel> box and select which codecs you want to install. Press <guibutton>Apply</guibutton> to install the selected codecs.</para>

			<para>In some countries, the use of certain codecs may be prohibited by law. You should verify that you are permitted to use them before installing them.</para>
		</warning>

	<sect1 id="photos" status="review">
		<title>Photos and cameras</title>
		<para>There are many tools available to help you to work with your digital photo collection.</para>
		
		<sect2 id="photos-import" status="complete">
			<title>Import photos from a digital camera</title>
			<para>Ubuntu automatically detects most digital cameras when you plug them in, and will offer to import your photos automatically.</para>
			<para>To import photos from your camera:</para>
			<procedure>
				<step><para>Plug-in and switch on the camera by placing it in review mode. Ubuntu should ask you if you would like to import the photos that the camera contains.</para></step>
				<step><para>Click on <guibutton>Import</guibutton>. You should then see a preview of the photos.</para></step>
				<step><para>Choose a location to save your photos to, then click on <guibutton>Import</guibutton>. The photos will be saved to your hard drive.</para></step>
			</procedure>
			
			<para>If Ubuntu does not ask you if it can import the photos:</para>
			<procedure>
				<step><para>Open <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Graphics</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>F-Spot Photo Manager</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and choose <menuchoice><guimenu>File</guimenu><guimenuitem>Import...</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.</para></step>
				<step><para>Select your camera as the <guilabel>Import Source</guilabel> and then press <guibutton>Import</guibutton> to begin importing your photos.</para></step>
			</procedure>
			<para>If your camera does not appear as an import source, press <menuchoice><guimenu>Places</guimenu><guimenuitem>Computer</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and check if your camera is visible there as a removable storage device. If it is, you can then copy the photos manually using the <application>File Browser</application>.</para>

		<sect2 id="photos-organize" status="complete">
			<title>Organize your photo collection</title>
			<para><application>F-Spot</application> provides a complete solution for managing your photo collection. To start it, choose <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Graphics</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>F-Spot Photo Manager</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.</para>
			<para>With <application>F-Spot</application>, you can import photos from your digital camera or USB stick, tag them with familiar terms, do touch ups, and edit them in different ways. In addition to this, you can upload photos easily to your Flickr, PicasaWeb album and other online photo galleries.</para>

				<para>Make sure that you select your printer from the list on the <guilabel>General</guilabel> tab to get the full range of settings supported by your printer.</para>

					<title>Paper Type</title>
					<para>The paper type that you use has a large impact on the quality of your printed photo. You should set the paper type to match the paper which you are using in your printer to prevent poor results. Using a <emphasis>glossy</emphasis> paper type with only <emphasis>plain</emphasis> paper loaded into your printer will generally produce poor results, for example.</para>
					<para>This setting may automatically change the amount of ink which is used, in order to get the best results and to prevent smudging. How this is handled will depend on your printer.</para>

				<sect4 id="photos-printing-quality" status="review">
					<title>Print Quality</title>
				
					<para>Print quality is generally measured in <emphasis>DPI</emphasis> (dots per inch). A greater DPI value should result in better print quality.</para>

Once installed, press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Graphics</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>PhotoPrint</guimenuitem></menuchoice> to start PhotoPrint.</para>

		<title>Edit and improve photos</title>
		<para>Sometimes, you may need to adjust or touch-up a photo to make it look better or to remove some flaw. <application>F-Spot</application> includes a few basic tools for doing this. To access these tools, press the <guibutton>Edit Photo</guibutton> button and then click on one of the tools at the bottom of the screen.</para>
		<para>The <application>GIMP Image Editor</application> is much more advanced. It is installed in Ubuntu by default, and can be started by choosing <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Graphics</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>GIMP Image Editor</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.</para>
		<para>The GIMP has many professional-level features. It includes tools for selections, drawing, creating paths, masks, filters, effects, and more.</para>
		
		<sect3 id="photos-rotating" status="review">
			<title>Rotating photos</title>
			<para>You may find that you have some photos which are the wrong way up. It is easy to rotate photos so that they're the right way up again.</para>
			<para>The <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:eog#eog-manipulate">Image Viewer</ulink>, F-Spot Photo Manager, <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:gthumb#gthumb-rotate-jpeg">gThumb Image Viewer</ulink> and the GIMP Image Editor are all capable of rotating photos.</para>

		<sect3 id="photos-resizing" status="review">
			<title>Resizing photos</title>

			<para>You can resize photos which are too big. If you have a photo which has a large file size, resizing it will also reduce the file size.</para>
			<para>The <application>GIMP Image Editor</application> supports several methods of resizing photos. We will concentrate on the simplest method.</para>

		<title>Burn CDs and DVDs</title>
		<para>You can make your own CDs by <emphasis>burning</emphasis> files onto a blank disc using the <emphasis>CD Writer Drive</emphasis> of your computer.</para>
		<para>Ubuntu includes CD burning capabilities by default, and allows you to easily <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:user-guide#nautilus-cdwriter-data">create data CDs</ulink>, <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:user-guide#nautilus-cdwriter-copy">copy CDs and DVDs</ulink> and <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:user-guide#nautilus-cdwriter-writeimage">create CDs from a disc image file</ulink>.</para>
			
		<sect2 id="cdburning-audio" status="review">
			<title>Burning audio CDs</title>
			<para>It is possible to copy music from your computer onto a CD, so that it can be played in another CD player. You must have a CD recording drive to be able to do this.</para>
			<para>When you put a blank (recordable) CD in the drive, Ubuntu will ask if you want to burn an audio or data CD. Clicking on <guibutton>Burn Audio CD</guibutton> will launch <application>Serpentine</application>. Alternatively, you can launch <application>Serpentine</application> by pressing <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Sound &amp; Video</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Serpentine Audio CD Creator</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.</para>
			<para>To add music to your audio CD, either drag music from your File Browser or use the <guibutton>Add</guibutton> button. You will also need to select the size of the CD which you inserted (21, 74, 80 or 90 minutes). Serpentine will warn you if you exceed the set limit.</para>
			<para>The <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:rhythmbox#cd-burning">Rhythmbox Music Player</ulink> is also able to burn audio CDs.</para>
