686		Update minimum cmake version to 3.6. Update minimum cmake version to 3.6. Our original 2.6 minimum was already a little speculative, as the initial implementation was done with 2.8.  Older versions are rarely tested anyway, and in the course of this update I came across syntax requiring 3.5 that's been there a while, so versions older than that probably haven't been tried in years anyway. 3.6 is available in EPEL for CentOS 6, which is out of any hint of support upstream, and was replaced 7 years ago by CentOS 7 which is itself already a year out of full updates.  This is probably an excessively conservative lower bound even for us, but it's a step. See also some of LLVM's discussion about their level bumps last year, e.g. https://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2020-March/140349.html (currently requiring 3.13.4).	Matthew Fuller	3 years ago

Reorganize CHANGES a little to move some more important bits higher up.  Move the manual a level down to ease putting other kind of docs beside it in the future.  Do some improvements of crossreferencing and description of a few params.  Tweak the doc build process to be able to use the pregen'd HTML even if we find a method to build it that we don't choose to use.  Other minor adjustments. Make some improvements/extensions in the manual build process. - Enable intermediate targets for building DocBook XML from the   asciidoc source. - Enable building PDF versions via dblatex (via the XML). - Add a (almost certainly never taken) path to build manpage via xmlto   (via the XML and the DocBook XSL stylesheets).  This could   potentially allow a better output in some cases than asciidoctor's   manpage generation.  On the other hand, it has somewhat differing   requirements that lead to worse PDF generation, so it's mostly for   example/documentation at the moment. - Allow manually building the HTML with asciidoc with less effort.   Kept disabled by default for speed reasons. This is more an abstraction than a simplification, and winds up being significantly more total code.  However, it moves a lot of the grody details out of the main flow into building-block functions, which makes it a bit simpler to follow the high-level descriptions.  It also prepares the ground for some intended expansions of how we can build docs. Because of $REASONS, it can wind up running the preprocessing of the asciidoc source twice in parallel, which opens up the chance for half-written files to be used for the build.  This is apparently the blessed workaround, and seems to DTRT in testing. 414		Rework the manual building process to better engage with asc... Rework the manual building process to better engage with asciidoctor. The cmake build process checks for the existence and version of asciidoctor, and uses it to build the manpage and/or HTML outputs as possible.  If it's not around and capable, asciidoc/a2x is used instead (status quo).  HTML isn't built if asciidoc is all we have, just because it's so slow.  The cmake config for manual building is significantly reshuffled as part of this, and is hopefully a lot more readable. The doc/Makefile is swapped around to default to using asciidoctor (even though only not-yet-released versions can build manpage output). This is declared OK since that Makefile exists mostly for tar-building uses, and peripherally sometimes for manual dev.  And for dev use, it defaults to only building the HTML, which any asciidoctor out there can do.  The -asciidoc targets are still available for manual use if necessary. This makes it a bit easier to find bits, and some reorganization done in the process also brings related pieces closer together instead of being strung out across the whole file.
