    <title>The &kapp; Main Window</title>

      The &kapp; main window is divided up into three sections.  An editor window to the right, a preview of the pattern at the top left

      and a palette of the current patterns flosses at the bottom left.

      The three sections are divided by splitters, which can be moved to change the amount of space allocated to any of the sections.

    <para>

      The layout of other elements, menu bar, toolbars - main toolbar, stitch toolbar and tools toolbar - and the status bar,

      is similar to other KDE applications you run .  As with other KDE applications the position of the toolbars can be moved

      to any edge of the window, or detached completely.

      The status bar at the bottom of the window shows, from left to right, general messages, sizes (when using rectangles, ellipses,

      selections, etc), format of the scales (<emphasis>ST</emphasis>itches, <emphasis>IN</emphasis>ches,

      <emphasis>C</emphasis>enti<emphasis>M</emphasis>etres), enabled <emphasis>S</emphasis>titch mask and enabled

      <emphasis>C</emphasis>olour mask. The stitch and colour masks can be toggled on and off by clicking in the relevant

      section of the status bar.

  <sect1 id="kxstitch-editor" >

    <title>Editor Window</title>

    <para>

      The main editing window shows a grid pattern and scales top and left.  This is a scrolling, zoomable view of

      your pattern and allows you to use the various editing tools to modify your design.

      Generally the &LMB; is used to activate any of the tools on the pattern. Details of each of the tools and their use is shown

      in the command reference section.

    </para>

    <para>

      The scales can be formatted in stitches, centimetres or inches and the amount of space allocated to the scales is configurable

      in the &kapp; configuration dialog. This is useful for larger patterns that require larger numbers for stitches to be displayed.

    </para>

    <para>

      The grid shows heavier lines dividing the cells into groups. The number of cells per group is configurable, the default is 10, as

      are the colours for the lines. This is useful if you are creating patterns on a dark coloured canvas that requires lighter 

      coloured lines for contrast.

      A menu option allows you to add a background image to the editor window, to use as a template for adding stitches. For more

      details see the section on Creating Patterns.

      <title>Context Menu</title>

      <para>

        Using your &RMB; on the editor will activate a context menu allowing you to change the format of the scales and the visual

        appearance of the stitches.  It also allows you to toggle on or off the background image, the stitches, backstitches, the grid 

        and the scales.

  <sect1 id="kxstitch-preview" >

    <title>Preview Window</title>

    <para>

      The Preview window shows an overview of the current design at a smaller scale than the Editor window.  The Preview

      also shows a black rectangle representing the current view within the Editor window.

      By clicking the &LMB; within the preview window, the Editor window will be centered on that point. Additionally by

      pressing down the &LMB; and dragging, the Preview window can be scrolled.

  <sect1 id="kxstitch-palette" >

    <title>Palette Window</title>

    <para>

      The Palette window shows the floss colours currently in this patterns palette as coloured blocks, and optionally with the

      symbols that are associated with each colour.  Moving the mouse pointer over a colour block will pop up a tooltip showing

      the colour number and name for that colour.  Clicking on a colour selects that colour for the next painting or drawing function.
