<p>The aim of the Xubuntu community
16
project is to provide a nice Ubuntu desktop experience (even on older
17
hardware) by using Xfce4 as the desktop environment and GTK+ 2
18
applications wherever possible.</p>
19
<p>The Ubuntu project, which Xubuntu is based on, is built
20
on the ideas enshrined in the
21
Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge,
22
that software tools should be usable by people in their local language,
23
and that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their
24
software in whatever way they need. For those reasons:</p>

also great fun. Read further in this document to learn how you can

participate in the Xubuntu Project, and about the free software

<p>You might have heard of this amazing thing called "Linux".
114
Linux is a "kernel", it is the core piece of software that starts up
115
when you turn your computer on, and it in turn runs all of the other
116
applications that make up the whole desktop environment. In many ways
117
it's a tiny part of the whole mix, but its role is so important that
118
many people describe the whole desktop as "Linux". Linux is the
119
software which has come to define the worldwide movement to embrace
120
free software. There is another project, called GNU, which set out to
121
create a free operating system before Linux did, and today we use the
122
Linux kernel together with many of the GNU applications. That's why we
123
call Ubuntu an example of GNU/Linux software. Find out about GNU/Linux

<p>There are many GNU/Linux distributions (e.g., Fedora, SuSE,
132
Debian, Mandriva, Gentoo), but Xubuntu distinguishes itself with
134
of focus, simplicity of installation and use, and a development
135
approach that is both transparent and welcoming.</p>
136
<p>By default, Xubuntu includes a core selection of the best
137
desktop software for typical desktop users. Almost everything else, the
138
entire free software universe of applications, is available over the
139
Internet for easy installation directly onto this basic desktop
140
environment. Our package management uses the powerful "APT" package
141
management system, which allows easy installation and clean removal of
142
programs, as well as automatic download of any extra packages required.
143
Ubuntu's core list of officially supported software packages is reduced
144
to only the important applications. This allows for greater quality
145
control. For advanced users, the <span class="emphasis"><em>"Universe"</em></span>
146
and <span class="emphasis"><em>"Multiverse"</em></span>

archives provide instant access to more applications that are

maintained and supported by the Ubuntu community.</p>
