Welcome to xmcd <I>Local Discographies</I>. This is a storage area on
35
your system that can be used to collect and organize files related to
36
each CD you own. The files can be text, HTML or other documents,
37
image or animation files, sound clips, etc. Examples are music reviews,
38
artist interviews, photographs, fan information, MP3 sound files etc.
39
You can download these from fan sites on the Internet, or create your own.
40
You can make local web pages that contain links to Internet
41
sites, or links to files associated with other CDs in Local Discographies.
43
These files can be viewed, played and/or printed using the <I>wwwWarp</I>
44
feature of xmcd. Xmcd will drive an external web browser to access
48
<H2>Directory Organization</H2>
51
The top-level Local Discographies directory is <B>$DISCOGDIR</B>
52
on your system. This was created when xmcd was installed.
53
Under this directory there are directories for each music category
54
(i.e., <I>rock, classical, jazz,</I> etc.). These categories match those
55
of the CD database. Under each category, xmcd maintains directories
56
pertaining to each CD. The directory names are the 8-digit
57
disc ID of each CD. The category and disc ID are both shown on the
58
xmcd <I>CD Database / Program</I> window. In the directory you can
59
store files related to the CD.
61
For example, if you have a CD whose category is <B>jazz</B> and the
62
disc ID is <B>c00fc60e</B>, then the directory for this CD is:
65
$DISCOGDIR/jazz/c00fc60e
69
<H2>Setup Instructions</H2>
72
Here is the information on how to set up Local Discographies.
74
<H4>wwwWarp configuration</H4>
76
Xmcd must be configured properly for <I>wwwWarp</I>. This means that
77
there is a supported web browser on your system (<B>Netscape Navigator</B>,
78
<B>Netscape Communicator</B> or <B>NCSA Mosaic</B>).
79
When xmcd was installed the correct browser must be configured.
80
If your xmcd was not configured correctly for <I>wwwWarp</I>, you can
81
re-configure it by logging in as <B>root</B>, and then running the
82
<B>$XMCDLIB/config/config.sh</B> script.
84
Of course, in order to reach Internet sites, your system must be connected
85
to the Internet. However, the Local Discographies feature does not require
86
an Internet connection.
88
Once configured, re-start xmcd and check the wwwWarp feature by choosing
89
"<B>Browse the official Xmcd web site</B>" and clicking "<B>Go!</B>".
91
<H4>Local Discography directories</H4>
93
When xmcd is installed for the first time, the top level Local Discographies
94
directory as well as the music category subdirectories are created for you.
95
When you use wwwWarp to view a CD's Local Discography, the directory for
96
that CD is automatically created for you if it doesn't already exist.
97
The path name of the directory is described in the
98
<B>Directory Organization</B> section above.
100
An HTML index file is also automatically generated by xmcd and installed
101
in each CD's Local Discography directory. This is the file that xmcd will
102
point your web browser to, when you view a CD's Local Discography.
104
You can put other related files in each CD's Local Discography directory,
105
such as images and sound clips. These files will automatically appear
106
in the CD's Local Discography when you use xmcd's wwwWarp system to
109
You can set up <B>cron</B>(1M) on your system to run the
110
<B<$XMCDLIB/scripts/genidx<B> script periodically (for example,
111
once every night) to re-generate the per-category Local Discography
112
HTML index page ($DISCOGDIR/<I>category</I>/index.html). This allows
113
you to browse the categories using your browser.
115
You are now ready to use Local Discographies!
121
To use Local Discographies, start xmcd and load a CD in the drive.
122
Click on the <B>wwwWarp</B> button on xmcd's main window (this is
123
the button with the world symbol). A <I>wwwWarp</I> window will pop up.
124
Choose the "<B>Local Discography for this CD title</B>" entry,
125
then click "<B>Go!</B>" to make your web browser go to the
126
appropriate directory.
128
The web browser will display the artist, disc title and track title information
129
about the currently loaded CD, as well as other information from the
132
If there are other files in the directory, the browser will also
133
display a directory listing of the directory. You can click on a
134
file to view or play it. Note that your web brower may need certain
135
plug-ins in order to play some file formats.
137
The page will also display web links (URLs) associated with each CD,
138
if any are found in the extended information portions of the CD
139
database information.
145
Please be aware of possible legal implications when sharing music-related
146
files with others. Some of the information, including album cover art,
147
graphics and photos, lyrics and other data are likely to be protected by
