Amulets are listed in alphabetical order above. The COST field denotes
21
the base price of each amulet. WGT specifies the weight (100 zorkmids
24
Amulets comprise 1% of all randomly-generated items in the main dungeon,
25
1% in containers, and 4% in hell. PROB is the relative probability of
26
each subtype; the suffix specifies the chance of blessed/cursed:
27
c 0.5% blessed, 9% uncursed, 90.5% cursed
28
otherwise 5% blessed, 90% uncursed, 5% cursed
29
Imitation Amulets of Yendor may be found on the bones pile of the Rogue
30
level (50% chance), with "double trouble" Wizards of Yendor when you
31
don't have the real Amulet (50% chance), and with the player-monsters
32
on the Astral Plane (100%). The real Amulet of Yendor is carried by
33
the high priest(ess) of Moloch.
35
Except as noted below, the effects of amulets are controllable by
36
putting on and removing the amulet. If the EAT field is Y, then it
37
is possible to obtain an effect permanently by polymorphing into a
38
metallivore (rock mole, rust monster, or xorn) and eating the amulet.
39
There is only a 1/5 chance of obtaining the effect this way ("Magic
40
spreads through your body as you digest the amulet."). Eating an
41
amulet of unchanging will not confer unchanging, but instead return
42
you to your natural form ("un-change" you).
44
The appearances of the first nine types of amulets are randomized from
45
the following descriptions:
46
circular spherical oval
47
triangular pyramidal square
48
concave hexagonal octagonal
49
Both the imitation and real Amulets of Yendor appear as an "Amulet
50
of Yendor"; they can be distinguished by identifying each individual
51
copy, naming the real one, or by placing each inside a container (the
52
real one will not fit). The possible imitation Amulet on the Rogue
53
level is always pre-identified.
56
Wearing an amulet will increase the rate at which you get hungry
62
When either worn or eaten, it toggles your character's gender between
63
male and female. Gender has the following effects in the game:
64
Only female monsters can lay eggs.
65
Eggs in a male character's inventory may hatch tame monsters.
66
Males are seduced by succubi, females are seduced by incubi.
67
Nymphs "seduce" males and "charm" females.
68
The Cave(wo)man and Priest(ess) classes have different names.
69
It determines how you are addressed (purely cosmetic).
70
If you are polymorphed into a single-sex monster, your base gender will
71
be altered but not your current one, with the exception that an incubus
72
will change into a succubus and vice versa.
73
"You are suddenly very feminine/masculine!"
74
"You don't feel like yourself." (polymorphed into single-sex monster,
75
but character's base sex has changed)
76
"The amulet disintegrates!"
78
When worn, you will see monsters that have a brain when they are nearby,
79
or anywhere on the level when you are blind. If eaten, the intrinsic
80
telepathy only works when blind. No messages.
82
When worn, your life will be saved if you die; the amulet then
83
disintegrates. No message when put on. No effect when eaten (nice try).
84
amulet of magical breathing
85
When either worn or eaten, you gain amphibiousness and unbreathing. You
86
can swim under water and cannot be strangled or choked. No messages.
88
When worn, rays from wands, spells, and breath attacks can be
89
reflected. No message when put on. No effect when eaten (nice try).
90
amulet of restful sleep
91
When worn or eaten, you will fall asleep within 1 to 100 turns. You awaken
92
within 1 to 20 turns or when disturbed. If you continue wearing an
93
amulet of restful sleep, the cycle will repeat. No message.
94
amulet of strangulation
95
When worn, you are strangled to death in 6 turns. When eaten, you
96
instantly choke, with 1/20 chance of survival. Exceptions are made
97
if you have unbreathing from an amulet of magical breathing or
99
"It constricts your throat!"
101
When worn, you are prevented from changing your current form by
102
polymorph or other means, and are also protected from being slimed;
103
any sliming in progress is halted. No message when put on. When eaten,
104
you are "un-changed" to your natural form.
106
When either worn or eaten, you gain poison resistance. No message.
107
cheap plastic imitation of the Amulet of Yendor
108
No effect or message when put on. Cannot be eaten.
110
When carried, you get all of the following (mostly bad):
111
You get clairvoyance, if it is not blocked.
112
When casting spells, your energy is drained.
113
Hunger is increased (additional to normal amulet hunger).
114
Your luck timeout is increased.
115
Monster difficulty will depend on your deepest level reached, not
116
your current dungeon level.
117
Monsters are less likely to be generated asleep.
118
When going up levels in Gehennom, you may teleport down 0 to 3
119
levels instead. The chance depends on your alignment:
126
You cannot level teleport.
127
Teleportation within the level is blocked 1/3 of the time.
128
The Wizard can teleport or level teleport to find you.
129
The Wizard will try to steal the Amulet.
130
You are permitted to enter the Plane of Earth by taking the upstairs,
131
or quaffing a cursed potion of gain level, from dungeon level 1.
132
You can activate the endgame portals.
133
When worn or wielded, you get messages about the amulet getting
134
"hotter" as you approach magic portals. No message when putting
135
on. Cannot be eaten. (Would you sacrifice yourself, then?)
