When you log in to your computer, a short login sound is played. The exotic-sounding theme was inspired by the African origins of the word <em>Ubuntu</em>. You can easily disable it for yourself or for all users of your computer.

<item><p>Click the icon at the very right of the menu bar and select <gui>System Settings</gui>.</p></item>

To change the login sound, make sure the above <gui>GNOME Login Sound</gui> is checked. Then follow these steps:

<link xref="search">Search for file</link> desktop-login.ogg in the folder <gui>File System</gui>.

The file location will show in the <gui>Search results</gui>. The file should be located in <cmd>usr/share/sound/<your distro>/stereo</cmd> where <your distro> is a file named Ubuntu, Freedesktop or other.

Right-click on the file name, and click on <gui>Open Folder</gui>.

Find and <link xref="files-rename">rename</link> the original file <file>desktop-login.ogg</file> to <file>desktop-login-original.ogg</file> for backup.

<link xref="files-copy">Copy</link> the sound file you prefer in ogg format to the above folder and name the file as <file>desktop-login.ogg</file>.

Log out and log back in and the new login sound will be in effect.

You can change the default logout sound in the same way as described above. You would need to rename the original file <file>desktop-logout.ogg</file> to <file>desktop-logout-original.ogg</file> for backup. Then copy the sound file you prefer (in ogg format) to the above mentioned folder, and name the file as <file>desktop-logout.ogg</file>.
