<h2>Preparing your files</h2>

 

It is much easier to import your library if it is in a dedicated music folder. This is recommended to be Ubuntu's "Music" folder for two reasons in particular, the first being that it is easily accessible from the left pane of Nautilus, and the second being that it is the default place for music applications (such as Banshee) to look for content.

 

It is also recommended that you do <b>not</b> create a music library on a removable device, as Banshee will be unable to access your music whenever the drive is removed. If your music is saved on a removable device, be sure to copy it to your "home/Music" folder and then add the "home/Music" folder to Banshee.

 

<h2>Creating your library</h2>

 

To create your library, first open Banshee from the Ubuntu sound menu. You can do this by clicking on the sound menu icon in the notification area of your panel and then clicking "Banshee".

 

You will notice that Banshee's main view area is empty, as it has not yet scanned the system for your music. By default, it will be set to search the Ubuntu music folder - simply click "Tools" then "Rescan Music Library" if this is where your music is stored. If this does not import all your music, or if you saved your music in another location, you will have to direct it to your music folder. Go to Edit ▸ Preferences ▸ Source Specific and select the appropriate location in the "Music Folder" drop-down menu. Don't forget, you can click "Other..." in the menu to browse for other folders if the desired location is not shown. Once this is set, you can click "Tools" then "Rescan Music Library" to update the library.

 

That's all there is to it, you should see Banshee work its way through your library, adding and grouping albums and songs as it finds them.
