Ubuntu lets you connect to the internet through a proxy server. All you need to do is to enter proxy details in System ▸ Preferences ▸ Network Proxy .
5
It lets you choose between Direct internet Connection, Manual proxy configuration, and Automatic proxy configuration.
7
If you choose Manual proxy configuration, details to be entered include address of the proxy server, the port used and authentication if any. Authentication details can be entered by clicking the Details button. You may leave the fields empty if you do not use authentication. If you wish to connect to some hosts without using the proxy, you may add those in the Ignored Hosts section. If you use different proxy configuration in different locations, you can save the configurations separately using the Locations option.

To apply the changes over all different programs, click Apply System Wide.
