<h2> Personal Package Archives (PPA)</h2>The Ubuntu repositories, whilst extensive, do not contain every piece of software availible for Ubuntu - far from it. They also do not keep regular updates of most applications, instead only updating for releases which add major functionality or fix critical bugs. If you want to install or update software which is not fully maintained in the Ubuntu repositories, you may want to install or update it from a Personal Package Archive (PPA) instead.

 

A PPA is simply another repository - usually one which is created and maintained by the developers of an application - and always kept up-to-date. By telling Ubuntu the address of a PPA for an application, Software Centre and Update Manager will automatically add the latest versions of it to their catalogues. This means that the latest versions of the applications will be availible to download and update in the same way as any you obtain from the official repositories - without the need to download any installers or bloated update managers. Simply copy and paste the address of the PPA from the application's website into Software Centre and Ubuntu will take care of the rest - your applications will be ready in Software Centre for you to install. 

 

If you already have an older version of an application installed from the Ubuntu repository, don't worry! Update Manager will automatically update the older version to the newer version found in the PPA, and keep updating it with the rest of your system as new version are released.
