<h2>What are themes</h2>

 

<screenshot src="images/desktop-configuration_theme.jpeg" height="250" style="float:right;" />One of the easiest ways to change the appearance of your whole desktop is by changing the theme. 

 

Desktop themes change the colours and styles of every program using GTK on your computer at once. They also change the look of your icons, your desktop panels and the titlebars of windows; amongst other things. Some can even change the system sounds. Don't worry though, the changes are purely asthetic and do not change the way you interact with Ubuntu in any way. They can also be reverted at any time, so feel free to experiment.

 

<h2>Changing the Theme</h2>

 

To change your desktop theme select System ▸ Preferences ▸ Appearance.

 

Under the Theme tab, select a theme from the list of available options. Choosing a theme automatically applies the changes to your desktop. 

 

Once you've made your selection, click the Close button.

 

<h2>Downloading new themes</h2>

 

In truth, the themes which come packaged with Ubuntu are each a collection of various types of themes: icons packs, sounds and GTK2 themes. Most themes availible for download will only be one of these each, so be sure to remember that a GTK2 theme is one which changes the appearence of windows and panels. Themes of all three varieties can be downloaded from <a href="http://gnome-look.org">gnome-look.org</a> or several other websites on the internet.

 

Once a GTK2 or icon theme is downloaded, it can be added to your collection by navigating to System ▸ Preferences ▸ Appearance and then clicking the "Install..." button. You can then direct the wizard to the downloaded theme package and it will be installed for you.
