51

There are many GNU/Linux distributions (e.g., Redhat, SuSE,
52
Debian, Mandriva) but Kubuntu distinguishes itself as a
53
different kind of distribution.

54

Built on the solid and advanced base of Ubuntu, the Kubuntu
55
team aims to create a distribution that provides an up-to-date and
56
coherent GNU/Linux system for desktop and server computing.
57
Kubuntu includes a number of selected packages from Ubuntu and is
58
based on Debian's powerful 「Adept」 package management
59
system. Adept allows easy installation and clean removal of
60
programs, as well as automatic download of extra packages to
61
satisfy dependencies. Unlike most distributions that ship a wide
62
range of software packages that may or may not be of quality,
63
Kubuntu's core list of packages is reduced only to the most
64
important applications. (Although for maximum choice, you may
65
choose from over 10,000 packages ready to download, rather than
66
being limited to the selected core.)

67

By focusing on quality, Kubuntu provides a robust and feature
68
rich computing environment that is flexible for use in home and
69
commercial environments. The project has more time to spend on the
70
finer details and is able to release a version featuring the
71
latest and greatest of today's software, every 6 months. Kubuntu
72
ships with versions for PCs (Intel Pentium / AMD Athlon), 64-bit
73
PCs (AMD64) and Mac (PowerPC) architectures.

107

The default desktop environment for Kubuntu is KDE, a powerful Free Software graphical
108
desktop environment for GNU/Linux and Unix workstations. It combines ease of use, contemporary
109
functionality, and outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority of the Unix
110
operating system. KDE is one of the two leading graphical desktop environments for GNU/Linux
111
users. KDE sports an impressive array of easy to use, but powerful, graphical interface
112
applications for users of all ages in both home and work environments. For developers, KDE
113
provides a robust application development framework that enables rapid creation of first rate
114
applications implementing cutting-edge technology.

115

KDE is in many ways similar to GNOME, but there are a few distinct differences which
116
distinguish KDE as a desktop environment. KDE uses C++ at its base, with Qt (the Q-toolkit),
117
whereas GNOME, using GTK, is written in C. KDE is the older and most widely used
118
desktop environment, and is known to stress more the importance of features, and more recently,
119
usability. GNOME more notoriously attempts to pride itself on simplicity and ease of use.
120
Popular criticisms of GNOME are that it's lacking in features and applications, while it's often
121
commented that KDE has too many features which may themselves be hard to locate.

122

Nevertheless, KDE and GNOME respectively target different audiences,
123
and are fundamentally different in some respects, and the question of which
124
desktop environment is superior is inherently a subjective opinion in many
125
ways. Because of this, to at least make a proper decision about which is
126
more suited to yourself, it is advised that you try them both out.
127
Thus, it is very easy to install GNOME from a Kubuntu distribution, and
128
equally easy to install KDE from an Ubuntu setup.
