<h2>Visual Effects Overview</h2>

 

Ubuntu uses a program called Compiz Fusion to integrate visual effects with the desktop. They range from animating windows when minimizing and maximizing to displaying 3d window selectors and making fire, snow and rain on your desktop. Compiz requires a computer with 3d acceleration capabilities to use its range of effects, but the vast majority of modern machines do meet this criteria. It should be noted that Compiz effects do not serve purely asthetic purposes; whilst many are simply pleasent to look at, a large number provide utilities like window snapping and desktop switching which are not availible on a default configuration.

 

<h2>Activating Visual Effects</h2>

 

To activate the pre-configured effects through Ubuntu's controls, go to System ▸ Preferences ▸ Appearence ▸ Visual Effects and select a setting which best matches the abilities of your computer. Most machines will be able to handle any of these three settings, but if you experience sluggish animations, you can turn down the settings.

 

<h2>Customizing Visual Effects</h2>

 

The effects included in Ubuntu's pre-configured settings may not be exactly what you are looking for, and they only show a fraction of the true power of Compiz. To select which effects you want and which you don't, as well as configure individual effects, you will need to install the CompizConfig Settings Manager. It can be found and installed by searching the software centre for "compizconfig", where it will be titled "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm)", and then by clicking the "Install" button. The program will be accessible from System ▸ Preferences ▸ CompizConfig Settings Manager. This tutorial will not explain each plugin, but tooltips and descriptions inside the program should assist you in choosing the perfect combination of effects for your computer.
