<h2>The Contact List</h2>

 

When you complete the setup, as well as any other time you launch Empathy, you will be shown the Contact List. This list contains all contacts from your chat accounts, and it is from here you can start conversations.

 

You can add new contacts with Chat -> Add Contact. Select which account the contact is to be added to (normally same service as their chat account), then type their chat username for Identifier, and what you want to call them for Alias. Empathy automatically imports the contacts from your chat accounts.

 

You can set your status from this window. You're status contains a custom message, and also can contain how available you are. This not only lets other people know if you're free to chat, but will also effect things like chat notifications.

 

You can start conversations by double clicking a contact or by right clicking a contact and then selecting chat. You can also start a chat with someone by selecting Chat -> New Conversation from the menu at the top of the contact list.
