<h2> Finding a PPA</h2>* Finding a PPA

Applications' PPA addresses are usually found on their websites. Sometimes, these sites may link you to their page on a website called Launchpad. This is simply a website which allows developers to easily interact with each other and update their PPAs, but all you need to look for is the PPA address in a box on the left towards the bottom of the page - as shown in the image.

Once you have the PPA address, open Software Centre (advnaced users can use Synaptic Package Manager or Terminal to do this, but these methods are not covered here). Navigate to the "Edit" menu and select "Software Sources".

You will be prompted to enter your password, as installing software requires elevated privilages. You will then be presented with the Software Sources dialogue. Navigate to the "Other Software" tab.

You will see a list of the current repositories you have installed. By default, you will have only the official repositories here. To add the PPA for another application, click the "Add..." button towards the lower-left corner of the window and then paste your PPA address into the dialogue box. Click "Add Source" to save the PPA.

 

Click "Close" to save your changes. Software Centre will load the content of the new PPA and it will appear in the catalogue. Please note that no software has yet been installed or updated - but it has been added to Ubuntu's index. You can now install it in the normal way by searching for the specific application you want or selecting the PPA you just added in the panel to the left. If you already have an older version of the software in the PPA installed from the Ubuntu repositories, Update Manager will automatically update it to the version in the PPA (if it is newer) the next time it is run.
