The default file manager in Ubuntu is called Nautilus. It is used to sort your files.

 

You can open a folder by accessing the Places menu in between the Applications and System menus on the left hand side of the top panel.

 

Opening the home folder will take you where your files are stored. Within this home folder, you will find folders for your personal data titled Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and Downloads. You can use these directories to help you organise your files, or change them to suit your needs.

 

Folders can be found within other folders, as can files. Folders are used to organize, while Files contain actual data. Files can be music files, video files, documents, or many other things. When you double click on a folder, the file browser will display the contents of that folder. When you double click on a file, that file will open in it's default program. To navigate back out of the folder you have opened, press the back button in the upper left hand of Nautilus.
